An innovative production, Jazz Tennis at Rich Mix merges the unexpected disciplines of competitive sport and harmonic music with inspired effect. 

Who are they?
The internationally acclaimed jazz quartet in fact go by the name Paragon and their work is widely influenced by everything from Stravinsky to pop anthems of the eighties.

What is it?
It’s pretty much what it says on the tin. Jazz and tennis are the basic ingredients, but the show is rather an eclectic compilation of music and performance art, with only a hint at actual sport yet lashings of comedy. Paragon offer a rather less costly, and perhaps more inventive take on Wimbledon. So if these are key in your list of priorities, then Jazz Tennis at Rich Mix might be right along your baseline.

When is it?
Picking up racquets and saxophones on the final day of Wimbledon, the Jazz Tennis at Rich Mix is gig, set, match to round off the royal event on the 3rd July.

What’s on?
Watching Jazz Tennis at Rich Mix will include an afternoon and evening of live music, dancers, a bar, a public tennis court, video highlights, as well as the all important strawberries and cream.

Jazz Tennis at Rich Mix Bar takes place from 12pm – 11pm, Sunday 3rd July 2011.

Admission is free.

So you’ve been to bars, pubs and clubs, you’ve shopped till you’ve dropped and now your looking for a new experience, how about circus training…yes I said circus training.

Hidden in a Victorian power station adjacent to Hoxton Square you can have Aerial sessions such as the Flying trapeze, or Acrobatic and tightwire classes. There’re also a number of classes and courses for the younger ones starting from as young as 2yrs 9months old+, better than a weekend recovering from an evil hangover!

The Book Club fuses lively, creative events and late night drinking seven days a week with an alternative menu of brain-teasing and mind-expanding thought for food in the form of workshops, talks, cultural showcases, parties, ping pong, pool and the best in new music. The Book Club is the younger, slightly smarter sibling of the Queen of Hoxton, and has turned the conventional arts institution on its head, fusing boozing with brain power.

Two spacious floors of a former Victorian warehouse on Leonard Street have been kitted out for eating, drinking, thinking, meeting and dancing. Under the direction of young designers Shai Akram and Andrew Haythornthwaite, The Book Club has a familiar, eclectic feel as varied as the clientele and the entertainment on offer. The interior blends the raw, pared-down character of the building with layers of mix and match vintage soft furnishings, naïve mosaics and graphic lighting features, as well as the constantly evolving permanent exhibitions that adorn the walls.

The Book Club presents an eclectic ongoing programme of events and social activities in art, music, film, fashion, philosophy, design, science, and perhaps the odd spot of DIY and craft. The line-up includes special screenings and cross platform club nights showcasing new creative talent through to informal evening classes and talks by a host of eclectic and interesting thinkers.

The Big Mix Fest, Shoreditch

The Big Mix, formerly known as The Brick Lane Takeover, will take place across venues all over Shoreditch including Cargo, The Brickhouse, Rich Mix, Spitalfields, Vibe and many more. All proceeds from The Big Mix will go to help Macmillan make the difference between a good and a bad day for people affected by cancer, through giving practical, emotional and financial support. The Big Mix is a creative melting pot of music, comedy, fashion, art and cabaret spread across a variety of venues from midday sat 18th June until late.

Volunteering

Thousands of volunteers dedicate time and energy to improve the lives of people affected by cancer. Macmillan was started by a volunteer and volunteers are still an integral part of the charity. If you would like to volunteer at The Big Mix please contact thebigmix@macmillan.org.uk.

Disabled festival goers are welcomed to The Big Mix and will be given priority entrance to the venues where there is disabled access. Please contact The Big Mix Team for full venue access details.
